Calabria is located in southern Italy and is renowned for its stunning coastline, pristine beaches, charming hilltop towns, and rich history. I visited this beautiful area end of April, beginning of May and had absolutely lovely weather! The most authentic and beautiful places I discovered when in Calabria were the following:
Tropea: This picturesque coastal town is famous for its stunning beaches, crystal-clear waters, and dramatic cliffs. Don't miss the iconic Santa Maria dell'Isola church perched on a rocky promontory overlooking the sea.
Scilla: Known as the "Pearl of the Tyrrhenian Sea," Scilla is a charming fishing village with colorful houses cascading down the cliffside. Visit the Ruffo Castle and take a stroll along the Lungomare Cristoforo Colombo for breathtaking views.
Pizzo: This historic town is famous for its delicious tartufo ice cream and the charming Pizzo Castle, which offers panoramic views of the coastline. Explore the narrow streets of the old town and relax in the Piazza della Repubblica.
Reggio Calabria: As the largest city in Calabria, Reggio Calabria boasts a wealth of cultural attractions, including the renowned National Archaeological Museum with its impressive collection of ancient Greek artifacts. Don't miss the stunning Riace Bronzes, two ancient Greek statues discovered in the sea near Riace.
Gerace: Perched on a hilltop overlooking the surrounding countryside, Gerace is a medieval town with well-preserved architecture, including the imposing Norman Castle and the magnificent Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta.
Capo Vaticano: Nature lovers shouldn't miss Capo Vaticano, a breathtaking promontory known for its rugged cliffs, hidden coves, and pristine beaches with crystal-clear waters. It's a perfect spot for swimming, snorkeling, and enjoying the natural beauty of Calabria.
Sila National Park: Escape to the mountains and explore the stunning landscapes of Sila National Park. Hike through dense forests, discover picturesque lakes, and admire the diverse wildlife that inhabits this pristine natural reserve.
