Special places to visit in Normandy

Updated: May 9, 2024

What to do in Normandy?

Normandy, located in the northwest of France, has a rich history, stunning coastline, charming villages, and delicious cuisine.

We stayed at 5-star camp site Le Ranch directly located at the beautiful sea and beach of Normandy. We had even a sea view from our pitch! This was an ideal location to discover the region Normandy.

Here is a list of the most beautiful and interesting places we visited during our stay.

Mont-Saint-Michel

This UNESCO World Heritage Site is one of France's most iconic landmarks. Here you can explore the medieval abbey perched atop a rocky island, wander through the narrow streets of the village below, and enjoy breathtaking views of the surrounding bay.

Although it attracts quite some visitors it is so unique and impressive that it is definitely a must see and worth a visit, it's impossible to compare this place to any other!

My tips are to visit Mont-Saint-Michel early or late in the day to avoid the crowds, wear good walking shoes as there are cobblestones and many steps, and book your tickets and time slot to visit the abbey in advance.

Honfleur

This picturesque port town is known for its charming harbor lined with colorful buildings.

Here we explored the cobbled streets and visited art galleries.

We dined at restaurant La Tortue, offering delicious seafood dishes in a cozy atmosphere.

Stay recommendation: La Maison de Lucie, a boutique hotel located in a 17th-century building with elegant rooms and a tranquil garden.

Rouen

The historic capital of Normandy, Rouen is famous for its stunning Gothic cathedral, medieval timber-framed houses, and vibrant cultural scene. Here we explored the historic old town, visited the Joan of Arc Museum, and admired the impressive Gros-Horloge clock.

Restaurant recommendation: La Couronne, one of the oldest inns in France, serving traditional Norman cuisine.

Étretat

Known for its dramatic cliffs and natural arches, Étretat is a must-visit destination on the Normandy coast. My tips are to explore the scenic coastal path, visit the famous rock formations such as the Needle and the Arch, and relax on the beach.

If you would like to stay in this area then Dormy House is a good option. This is a charming boutique hotel overlooking the sea with stylish rooms and a Michelin-starred restaurant.

Bayeux

This medieval town is famous for its impressive cathedral and the Bayeux Tapestry, a UNESCO-listed embroidered cloth depicting the Norman Conquest of England.

We explored the lovely historic center, visited the tapestry museum, and took a stroll along the river Aure. We dined at the restaurant Le P'tit Bistrot, a cozy restaurant serving classic French dishes with a creative flair.
